2025 Picardy Chardonnay (NEW)

There are some great Chardonnays in this country and this is one of them, graceful and full of humility. A wine I would pick out of the crowd at any opportunity I get.

Tasting note by Shanteh Wale, Wine Pilot:

"All Dijon clones and from the estates single vineyard, handpicked, dry grown and matured in 25% new oak. A wine with lovely soft lemon flesh, Gardenia flowers and Honeysuckle. Japanese melon, golden apple and kernel. This is such an elegant wine, oak adds a creamy base with some warmed butter and citrus and white peach are focused and ripe on the palate.
This has a personality that gets along well with all food groups, feels leisurely and immensely sippable on its own and has a faceted structure for long term aging, between 5-10 years further.  Length of flavour and the arc of roast almond stays for long moments.

Try this with baked leeks and chicken thighs bathed in a cream sauce. 95 Points"

"I like Picardy Chardonnay and they might be best summed up as having flavour with finesse.

Well here’s a beautiful release; it’s all just so. It has a certain delicacy but offers excellent flavour. I’m thinking white peach, lime, a honey floral perfume, mint, green olive and fine spicy nutty oak. Acidity is fine and well-etched, there’s a gentle flintiness to texture, and the finish is long and fine with almond, bright acidity and a saline tang closing it out.

Picardy Chardonnay is made from equal portions of the four preferred clones 76, 95, 96 and 277 (selected by the University of Dijon) to achieve complexity.

The Pannells are looking towards the great white wines of the old world for inspiration and look to make a Chardonnay with floral characters, citrus fruits and minerality with good structure and texture.

Excellent fruit intensity, structure, pH to acid relationship and fine-grained tannins guarantee long life and excellent bottle development. The wines are also very approachable in their early years.
