The Sydney Morning Herald – Peter Bourne

Chardonnay's new breed

...Margaret River in Western Australia still wears the mantle of our most consistent chardonnay region. Today, a number of stylistically different chardonnays, such as Picardy, come from the cooler Pemberton region...

2007 Picardy Chardonnay, Pemberton, WA
A pure and precise wine but in no way simple. A platform of intense fruit flavours receives sympathetic winemaking which adds character and complexity. Balance is the key, with a drive of flavour and a wondrous grapefruit acidity on the finish.

Wine of the Week
Picardy Shiraz, Pemberton 2008

The famous Pannell family (founders of Moss Wood before Picardy) plough onward, conquering new challenges as they go. Perhaps global warming is helping but they now seem capable of making superb shiraz, as well as pinot noir and chardonnay, in Pemberton. Lovely cool-grown spicy fragrance, with smoky pepper and riper spice notes. It's medium-full bodied and intense, but finely structured, natural-tasting and light, with impeccable harmony, line and silken texture. A thoroughly delicious drink. Now to 10-plus years. Natural cork. 94/100.
Food Softer cheeses such as taleggio and Milawa Gold; lighter meats from chicken and game birds to veal and pork.

THE WINE FRONT - GARY WALSH

PICARDY CHARDONNAY 2008

FRIDAY, SEP 4 2009 BY GARY WALSH

We’ve since sold the house with the rock wall, as featured in the bottle shot, but I like to bring it back every now and then. Its stony presence has appeared in all my reviews of Picardy Chardonnay, and so has become something of a tradition. Price is going up and so it should - it’s one of Australia’s best Chardonnays.

Cashew cream, grapefruit, spice with some richer peach and melon fruit underneath. There’s a touch of wildness and funky barrel ferment here too that lends additional complexity. It’s fine, flinty and tight - a wine of precision and impeccable balance with a dry finish that’s long citrussy and spicy. If you know Picardy Chardonnay you won’t be disappointed with this release.

Gary Walsh - Shiraz 2007

Strikes me when I taste this (second time around now, first was in January for BRWB) that this is a Shiraz made like a Pinot, which also strikes me as a good thing. This is my pick of the 2007 Picardy red releases.Red fruit dominant (cherry and raspberry) with a shake of pepper and meaty complexity - vanilla oak present and correct, but well in the background. It’s medium bodied, nutty and savoury with a pleasing sense of dryness and freshness. Exemplary balance and a fair old lump of finesse…and something of a bargain too.
